How software designed for cardiologists, with cardiologists, is helping to decrease reporting time and complexity
Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) account for 31 percent of all deaths. Among Americans, approximately one person dies from the disease every 40 seconds. In addition to the toll that CVD takes on lives, it also drives incredible costs – an estimated $1,044 billion by 2030.

Given the volume of patients who enter hospitals needing cardiovascular care, it’s critical that the doctors who treat them are empowered with tools that deliver clinical insights and drive efficiency.
That’s why a team of software engineers and product managers from GE Healthcare embarked on a two-year journey to design an innovative cardiology reporting tool. Spending time with more than 50 clinicians worldwide, the group observed the cardiovascular patient and cardiologist experience from the moment the patient enters the hospital through discharge.
Their observations: Cardiologists face a complex user interface when it comes to documenting patient encounters, which can lead to low structured reporting adoption, missed or incorrect data entry, and wasted time. Their mission: create a solution that cardiologists want to use, that requires minimal time and effort, and ultimately helps enable faster treatment.
Centricity Cardio Workflow (CCW) 7.0 was born. Connecting data from all modalities to a single cardiology information system, the tool enables cardiologists to document patient reports with less clicks, less time and less complexity. For example, CCW includes a feature that enables clinicians to fill out an “all normal” report with a single click, and then document by exception. It also enables clinicians to see how the report will look as they are entering the information, so they can easily see what is missing and address those gaps before submission.
Hospitals are already experiencing results with GE Healthcare’s cardiology solutions, including Centricity Cardio Workflow – the solution from which CCW 7.0 evolved. For example, Klinikum Nuremberg, one of the largest municipal hospitals in Europe, saw the time it takes clinicians to complete a catheterization lab report decrease from 15-20 minutes to 5-10 minutes. Additionally, quality control compliance went from 95-98 percent to 100 percent in part because of the data and analytics delivered via CCW.
